Free Flowing and Flexible
“I was keen to create the twin bungalow with free flowing spaces, flexibility of using spaces and with dynamic shapes”, says Pune-based interior designer Sanjay Newaskarr of the adjoining residences he has designed for two brothers and their families in Pune’s Market Yard area. As the clients did not have any specific requirements except Sanjay design a different and unique home for them, he thought of creating a central double-height courtyard, with living spaces around it, reminiscent of traditional homes of India yet with contemporary touch through the use of modern design elements and amenities.
Given two residences, with a common wall, Sanjay thought of designing the two homes with a common design thread, yet with subtle differences to give each a slightly different look. Referring to the homes as a twin bungalow rather than as two separate residences, Sanjay says, “We did not want to make any difference in both the bungalows. Due to this, the main focus was to make two separate homes but the feeling should be of one home”. So while the adjoining façades of the two homes are grey, they are slightly different in treatment: one residence has a simple projecting balcony with toughened glass panels and the other has a semi-covered balcony with an eye-catching red wall with slits, the interiors are similar in plan and design. Interestingly the balcony with glass panels has two inch stainless steel pipes on the inside, almost creating an impression of free standing glass walls from the outside.
